Knowing Your Audience
A company or represent of the company must note the critical component to delivering and communicating a message in the event of a catastrophe or disaster. Comprehension of his or her audience is vital for the delivery and design of all communications. A poor understanding of the recipients of the message can lead to issues in miscommunication, resentment, and uncertainty. The mining company must communicate quickly and accurately to ensure creditability with the audience, such as in the small copper mine collapse, in northern Chile.

President Sebastián Piñera’s team had high stakes and acted quickly, obtaining “all it could from playing a successful hand” (Volk, 2010, p. 55). President Sebastián Piñera commissioned the Minister of Mining to manage the rescue of the miners. They worked quickly to gather the right team for the rescue as well as the equipment needed. According to Volk (2011), Piñera depleted $20 million to rescue the miners. The Government of Chile responded quickly and provided emergency funds for the rescue that gave them creditability, showed commitment, and good standing.
The family members needed the mining company to show sympathy for the situation and offer services. The Minister of Mining and other public and private entrepreneurs lived in Camp Hope to keep in touch with the miners’ families. The Minster of Mining made sure to give the family members pertinent news before it was on television (Romero-Meza & Blanco-Vidal, 2011). The Minister of Mining as well as other living in the camp showed their dedication and compassion for the miners and the family members. The family members also had basic needs (e.g. money, food, shelter). The face-to-face interaction with the Minster of Mining worked but the families needed services as well. The families and victims needed a crisis center, consoling through counseling, and play-by-play of the rescue efforts. The mining company and Chile government also needed a plan on how to care for the 33 miners once they were out to avoid lawsuits, if possible.
The 33 Chilean miners were not the only ones affected. The business buying the copper, local community, families of the miners, and the employees of the mining company were all affected and in need of information.
