Abstract
In the wake of growth, expansion, and overcoming temporary closing some departments for renovations, Kudler Fine Foods (Kudler) made the right business decisions to renovate its store sequentially; thereby eliminating the need to downsize its workforce. Management temporarily relocated affected employees to one of the other stores not under renovation offered the best solution for its customers, employees, and the community. Technology and Business Opportunities
According to NITA (the President’s principle advisor on telecommunication) few technologies have spread as quickly, or become so widely used, as computers, and the Internet. As reported by U.S. Census Bureau approximately 98% of Kudler’s target consumers use a computer and Internet services. Information technologies are rapidly becoming common fixtures of modern social and economic life, opening opportunities, and new avenues for many Americans across all demographic groups and geographic regions. Kudler can use strategic information systems to shape its organizational competitive strategy. Kudler can constantly scan its competitors’ website, which can divulge information about new products, potential alliances, financial standings, and advertising strategies used. Information technology is a vital component of Kudler’s strategy expansion. As the business and its clientele continue to grow technological advances has allowed Kudler to change the way it communicated with its customers. The company communicates through electronic mail and other social means e.g., Facebook, online food Blog, and interactive website. Kudler effectively reduce printing cost and eliminated the production of paper flyers altogether. In addition, technological advances have improved Kudler’s marketing strategy for its business activities intended to bring customers into its stores. Through its online marketing strategy, the company has unlimited potential to establish a new customer based of those the strictly use electronic commerce as a means of acquiring products or services. Because of technological improvements, the company offers electronic commerce capabilities, reaching a global network of potential customers to purchase online the products.
Technological advancements have also changed the way inventory and back end processes are executed. In all three stores, the point of sales network terminals interfaced with the inventory network. This connections allows Kudler to track and order merchandise without manually counting the items on the shelf. This technology also allows Kudler to effectively to manage inventory decision-making process between the three store managers. Integrating this new technology successfully has eliminated stock outage and on shelf over-stocked products. Kudler also can link its system with its suppliers and automatically orders needed merchandise without making a three-part paper traditional order request.
Kudler can benefit from Porter's competitive forces model that identifies five major forces that could endanger the company's position within the gourmet food industry. Kudler has established brand recognition and a reputation for providing the best customer services and the highest quality premium food products and gourmet cooking utensils that there is little threat from new competitors.
