Summary of the Time Period
The Labor Problem at Jamestown by Edmund S. Morgan was taken place during the time 1607-1618. Jamestown was established in the year 1607 May 14th. Though Jamestown was the first settlement in America it had very many problems such as labor problems in the text it states â€œMen spend their time bowling in the streets when their lives depended on work...plow and plant crops that have kept them aliveâ€ I think what the authors is trying to make visual for us is to let us know as a audience to show the conditions and social and economic problems of the people back then. I am wondering why the people of England did not think this through and prepare the land for the investors. And I also wonder why the English did not enslave the Indians or African Americans instead they go and put their own people at risk of danger and disease.
This influenced me to think that the English were so determined to make money they did not think of the social and economic problems of the first settlement in America. The reason I say that is because throughout the text it seemed like the English were â€œblind sidedâ€ when it came to actually growing crops to keep them alive. People were then ordered to grow their own food! Because the people thought living off money would be much easier. That leads to the fact the people struggled problems in the first settlement of America all due to being blind sided by the property of money.
Strengths & Weakness
The authors thesis was to get the point out to the people that it was not easy going through something â€œunplannedâ€. I think it was directed towards people that are studying the time of the sixteen hundreds so otherwise known as (Historians) I believe this text had very good voice in when the author explained the fact of the social and economic problems. Edmund S. Morgan wrote this article to tell to the audience (future historians) that life on a new land is not easy. He made a great effort on making us believe it was, by having to bring people off the streets to help settle the â€œnew worldâ€ for the investors to make money off of crops especially tobacco.
