In todays fast paced medical environment there are nurses who were born to lead. They have the personalities that engage people and can get them to follow them. Also there are managers some who are born leaders and others without the ability to lead. Here a view of the differences between leaders and managers their roles, responsibilities and qualities. Currently the the Transformational leader is the one being endorsed by the Institute of Medicince (Finkelman, 2012). Although it does not always work there are typically errors, here some strategies are reviewed to overcome these failures. While the manager is maintaing equilibrium the leader is working to bring about change, although the leader may not have a formal title they are able to motivate, give direction and influence others. In order for the leader to do this they must build trust with the staff (Grahek, Thompson, & Toliver, 2010). . Leaders have a vision; have strong influence with staff and the power to help bring about change (Finkelman, 2012). Leaders should have a personal integrity they must keep their word and build trust with the staff (Grahek, Thompson, & Toliver, 2010). Leaders and managers must be able to communicate effectively where a leader may communicate freely at times a manager may not be able to do so. (Grahek, Thompson, & Toliver, 2010). Leaders should also take personal accountability for their behavior and that of the organization (Grahek, Thompson, & Toliver, 2010). This may be done by using their power to influence others, to help change the staffs attitudes and behaviors to move towards a favorable outcome (Finkelman, 2012). While leaders tend to focus on the change needed managers will typically focus on managing or maintaining and equal balance (Finkelman, 2012). Leaders must take the risks ask questions and they are challenged to accept the change and meet it whereas managers tend to be ill equipped to deal with situations that are not routine (Finkelman, 2012). There are several main differences between leaders and managers. When change occurs a manager will accept it without question where as a leader will not only question it they will analyze whether this change will be effective, the what and why of it. Leaders may also help to initiate the change where managers seem more content to maintain and rely on their control of the situation (Finkelman, 2012). While a leader may look at change and see the big picture a manager may only see what the immediate effects and benefits are. This is also true in the way that managers perceive the change a leader will affect the change while staying true to them where a manager will follow along with whatever they are told to do (Finkelman, 2012). The leader is the change agent meaning that they are the catalyst for change; they get the ball rolling by looking for ways to improve the workplace, efficiency in which work is carried out through the implementation of policies and protocol (Finkelman, 2012). The leader gets the job done.
Transformational leadership
Transformational leadership is a style of leadership that is inspirational and motivational (Choudhary, Akhtar, & Zaheer, 2013). They look at the whole person and help to transform a follower into a leader (Finkelman, 2012). According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) this form of leadership is preferred.
