The world develops increasingly with fast pace, which requires organizations to improve and change continually to adapt the world. The leader as a core person in an organization or individual group plays a necessary role. An outstanding leader should not only possess special traits but also have to apply suitable leadership theory. As the society develop, the leadership theory is changing continually. To be specific, there are four types of leadership behaviors described by House and Mitchell (1974): directive leadership, supportive leadership, participative leadership and achievement-oriented leadership. Facing with different kinds of workers, leaders should choose adaptive leader behaviors. Kirsty said that she had judgment to make a clear target for followers to reach and she also stated that they are all together to work for the same goal ( Case Study: Week 5). The role of Kirsty in this organization is a leader who will give a straightforward destination for subordinates, and from Kirsty’s statement it could be seen that followers might be stimulated because they get confidence from their leader since they stay together as a team toward one goal, which is a reflective of path-goal theory. Kirsty also stated that she played various roles in this organization as protector, motivator and visionary (Case Study: Week 5). Leaders possess different characters in a company, but the core role in an organization according to path-goal theory are visionary and motivator. Primarily leaders have to establish a specific target and then motivate employees to get rid of the obstacles. Moreover, leaders have to steer subordinates willingly to reach goals via a few substantial methods. For instance, leaders could provide rewards, welfare or the elements which followers need. As House and Mitchell (1974) noted, followers might be motivated by more kinds of payoffs which got from work. Furthermore, followers might prefer to complete the work when the goals are easier to reach or the obstacles are easier to remove (Northouse 2012). Based on above, the key factor in path-goal theory is employee motivation which generated by chief. The task might be completed efficiently by followers if they are satisfied with their work conditions. To be specific, leaders’ behaviors are the source of employee motivation. However, Timpe (1987) argued that there is a positive link between employee satisfaction and problem-solving leadership if the work is complicated. There are various ways to generate employee satisfaction, leaders have to utilize different methods during different situations.
The next leadership theory which could be seen in the leadership of Kirsty is leader-member exchange theory. The main point of this theory is that both of subordinates and supervisors could understand each other in-depth through an interaction. For example, Kirsty said that she had to believe followers devote themselves for their agreed goals and she would be open to listen to others’ advices.(Case Study: Week 5) It is helpful to get suggestions from subordinates to make correct decision. However, the fundament of this way of communication is trust, employers and employees have to believe each other mutually.
