Leadership and Performance in the Workplace

Leadership and Performance in the Workplace
At Woody’s Veneer Factory there are many issues that are affecting the success of this establishment. For one there is an absence of a team work ethic. In order for the company to become more successful the floor workers and managers need to develop a team like mentality. Another element that would contribute to the organization would be finding leadership theories that would improve the performance of the workers. After these have been solved the company needs to discover the difference between managing employees and being a leader. The only way the company can hope to overcome their obstacles is by ...view middle of the document...

Team commitment and team mental model are characteristics important to teams but not groups (Spector, 2012).
In the Woody’s and Veneer factory the two team concepts that could be useful for the organization would be team commitment, “The depth of the commitment of team members to work together effectively to accomplish the goals of the team is a critical factor in team success.
The relationships team members develop out of this commitment are the key in team building and team success” (Heathfield, 2015). The employees in the factory have forgotten the importance of the meaning of being a team, finding out which employees are willing to continue to be a team will be important to the team in the long run for the company. When a team works together they need to be assured they have some common conception they can work as a team. For the second concept is team mental model refers to the shared understanding among team members of the task, team, equipment, and situation (Spector, 2012). Working and strengthening the team and using the mental model in the Woody’s and Veneer factory, the team can perform more efficiently and the conflicts could lesson within the organization.
Leadership Theories
One leadership theory that would benefit the Woody’s Veneer factory would be the authentic leadership theory. This theory purposes that having managers who are transparent, cognitively aware, and have a moral viewpoint is essential in order for organizations to be successful (Fusco, O'Riordan, & Palmer, 2015). This is something that the managers at Wood’s Veneer Factory lack. The managers are consistently having money shortages and losses that are unaccounted for which displays a lack of transparency about where the money is going. According to Fusco, O’Riordan & Palmer (2015), the main reason why the Lehman Brothers went bankrupt in 2008 was due to a lack of transparency about their substantial debt. Thus, the mangers must develop authentic leadership skills so that the same fate does not fall upon Woody’s Veneer Factory. A way to keep this from occurring is by implementing authentic leadership coaching groups which are designed to help improve managerial skills.
Another theory that would improve the conditions for this organization would be the ethical leadership theory. This theory illustrates how job performance increases when managers use an ethical approach. During a study of 171 workers and 24 supervisors the performance of the workers became better when the managers used ethical leadership (Bouckenooghe, Zafar, & Raja, 2015). The reason why ethical leadership aids companies is because it causes workers to perform in a positive way and decreases them trying to sabotage their company’s goals. Workers are less likely to have destructive tendencies towards their company if they experience a sense of collectiveness with their superiors (Bouckenooghe, Zafar, & Raja, 2015). This is not the case with the managers and workers at Wood’s...
