Question 1: Classical management theory conceptualises communication as a downward, one-way transfer of information from management to staff. What in your view makes for good leadership communication in organizations?

Communication in organizations relates to the interactions of message delivery and receipt between individuals at the divergent position levels in organizations. According to Miller (2012), an organization is a machine whose parts are replaceable. He introduces three theories which emphasise the field of management as Fayol’s theory of Classical Management, Weber’s theory of Bureaucracy and Taylor’s theory of Scientific Management. In addition, he indicates that in Faoyl’s theory, corporate communication is a one directional flow of information from the top level management through middle supervisors to lowest positions of the organizational hierarchy. While Fayol’s and Weber’s theories are determined by the strict structure in organizational communication, Taylor’s has slightly different viewpoints in the approaches of the relationship between leaders and followers which are still efficiently maintained for current organizations (Miller, 2012). Therefore, leadership communication in traditional supervision as a series of vertical flow command of what must exactly happen could create the sensation of being controlled or manipulated for receivers (Derrick et al.,2010). However, it is not simple to be successful leaders because the followers just partly accept the right decisions, assessments and directions from them. Moreover, leaders need to be able to offer their thought, opinions and instructions through selective communication (Walker, 2011; Neufeld et al., 2010). Hence, in order to address the weakness of conventional communication in management approaches and gather leadership characters, whether it is a challenge to be a good leader depends on how that person deals with their followers through communication.

Firstly, a good leader is required an ability to be an active listener. Generally, a person has needs to communicate with others then also has needs to be listened. In other words, people desire to engage active listening from others. However, there are greater passive than active listeners who are likely becoming a defensive and less attention listeners (Walker, 2011; De Varies et al.,2010). Therefore, self-educated active listening skill is one of compulsory solutions to be a good leader. According to Dubrin (2005), a strategic leading communicator should less talk than listen four times. For example, leader should prepare to summarize, analyse and paraphrase the message from the speaker to ensure they fully understand what has been said. These skills are important because they allow leaders to more accurately and concisely answer to the concerns of what they should do to lead and foster more productive communication generally. Nonetheless, the shortage of communication in classical management theory is the lack of deal with collecting feedback via listening that leads the communication as a monologue process (Larson, 2004, p.36 cited in Walker, 2011).
