Leadership Style
Hewlett Packard is a multinational hardware and software corporation headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The President and Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett Packard is Margaret “Meg” Cushing Whitman. She assumed this role in September of 2011after serving on the Board of Directors for Hewlett Packard (HP). Meg Whitman was born and raised in Long Island, New York where she graduated from high school in just three years. She also made a major decision to have the company retain and recommit to the personal computer business. This was a tough decision considering her predecessor was placing that division on the chopping block. Whitman is a tough, straight forward shooter and upon taking helm, bluntly stated that it would take years to put this company back in the forefront of the industry. She had a major vision for what that would take, which included saving the printing division and that division has been doing wonderfully.
Meg Whitman’s leadership style and leadership philosophy is more that of learning from her environment and listening to her people to get a feel for what is needed from her and the management team. She tends to listen to her employees and let them voice their opinions, concerns, and ideas in meetings. It is important to her that she understands that just because she is President and CEO does not mean that she knows everything. This keeps her open to hearing what others have to present and does not put her in a position of trying to control her employees. Whitman feels that people are basically good and they should be trusted, making her a very supportive leader. Along with listening, learning and collaboration, she feels that building relationships and learning to influence others to be a successful leader is key. At Hewlett Packard, Whitman is supportive and participates in the creativity and innovative thinking which is fostered there.
Whitman’s personal leadership style aligns with the culture of Hewlett Packard. From the corporate website, Meg Whitman states, “Success hinges on consistency of leadership, focus, execution, and most importantly, great products and services. We are in a multi-year journey to turn Hewlett Packard around, and we have put in place a plan to restore Hewlett Packard to growth. We know where we need to go, and we're making progress. We continue to drive product innovation in our core markets, with a focus on cloud, security, and big data. We see big opportunities ahead, and we are well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities with our remarkable set of assets and strengths. Ethical behavior can be influenced greatly by the CEO of the company. The values of the CEO carry a lot of weight in determining the culture and how employees perceive their own actions and expectations. With the company engaged in offering products, technologies, and services to its retail as well as business to business customers and education, government and healthcare sectors, the company needs to have employees that will get the job done efficiently. The “HP way” is to encourage individuals to work under their own motivation, treat employees like family for strong camaraderie.
