A Life of Simplicity
We are always taught while growing up that we must always aim for the stars, that life can always get better, if and only if you aim big. We are taught that a great life can only be achieved through material and monetary means. That your self worth is only equal to what you own. The aim of society is no longer to be free and live a life of comfort but to be a part of the bigger picture and feed the machine. Henry David Thoreau expresses his concern on these issues in detail in his works Walden and “Civil Disobedience”.

And yet, they do not see the pure futility in the idea that doing this will make them happier. As Thoreau said, “I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb nail.” Once again Thoreau is instructing everyone to live a life of simplicity, a life that will fulfill your every need but will not bend you over backwards, a life that will not lead you into excess, a good life.
Thoreau also actively and vehemently speaks on government, “I heartily accept the motto – that government is best which governs least…that government is best which governs not at all; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.” This is another extremely prevalent issue especially in America. That big question: Do we trust the government’s strong hand or do we question it? In America we pride ourselves as being extremely patriotic, and we are but almost to a fault. It has become an almost unsettling trend in America to believe in every decision the government makes without question. Now this is not to say that the government in the United States is a constant failure, but several of its recent decisions put its credibility into question. The recent riots in Ferguson, Missouri in particular shed light on this issue. After a young man is shot by a police officer (whether it was justified or not is another issue entirely) the community protests it as a cold-blooded murder.
