“Live Like a Dog, Alone” is a short story about two people meeting in a taxi. They are both very lonely. The woman that entered the taxi is called Miriam. Miriam is a middle-aged woman on her way home from the hospital. She lives a chaotic, stressful life and that’s why her heart is always racing in overdrive, which often ends her in the hospital. The taxi driver is a refugee from Kosovo. At five in the morning they start a conversation. The taxi driver is the one who actually manages to make her realize how lonely she is.
3) Comment on the title
The story is called ”Live like a dog, alone” because this statement is the pivotal point of the story. This theme is discussed many times in the taxi. Miriam discusses it with herself and ends up realizing that she is similar to the man and live’s like a dog, alone. “No creature in nature lives alone” he said, firmly “except dogs” (4 page line 117) This fits perfectly with the title and the description of the two people’s life situation.
4) Discuss the ending
In the end the taxi driver turns into the street where Miriam lives and she starts to think about what was around to happen. She would ask him in, there would be sex, they would end up married, he would stop being an illegal, because she is a business woman and so on The fact that she actually allowed him to come in for a cup of coffee shows that Miriam has changed. The old Miriam, who the story has been telling us about, would never let a ”stranger inside”. Earlier in the text she lies and says to the driver that she has a husband. That showed that she didn’t want him to
come inside. This is probably because she had the conversation with the taxi driver in the car and she kept saying to her self that she had a good life and was happy. But, he
made her realize how superficial her life was and how...
