What is evil?
Many of us may be wondering if it really exits the evil, and if it does, what is it? According to Collins Dictionary, the evil is defined as being something morally wrong or bad, a force or power that brings about wickedness or harm or somethingoffensive or unpleasant (between many other definitions).
There are different four different ways of understanding the evil according to the "The Myth of Evil" written by ... which are the monstrous conception, the pure conception, the impure conception and the psychological conception.
The monstrous conception is explained as being a form of pure evil in which we can see the monster in human shape. These monsters are willing to ...view middle of the document...
Pure evil is malice for its own sake whereas instrumental evil occurs just in cases.
Last but not least, the psychological conception rejects evil as a human capacity and it says that when a human commits an evil, he cannot chose to make it freely or rationally. The human beings have been put under some extreme circumstances like madness or necessity. If madness, it means that they have done those actions due to the fact that they have lost contact with reality and they are not morally responsible of their actions. If necessity, it means that they have been forced to make normal acts through extreme actions.
The aim is to discover whether the idea of evil has any place in a secular understanding of humanity, or whether it is an irremeably religious or supernatural or mythological concept.
“Lord of the Flies” starts with some innocent boys who survived a plane crush. This novel shows that evil exists in all conceptions and in all of us. We have the example of the boys who get stuck on this island without any grownups. Despite of the innocence and the good intentions of the children, their world collapsed into violence and savagery. We can say that in this novel, William Golding shows that all men have the capacity for evil due to their own innate nature.
These young boys struggle to survive on this island and they face a series of challenges such as eating, sheltering themselves and trying to figure out how to be rescued. On their way to maintain a civilized order, it turns out that they are capable of evil probably due to the extreme circumstances they have to face. It may start as a game, but it doesn’t follow the rules of a childish game. Soon they start to compete between each other and they turn into savages forming tribes against each other thinking that is just a game but in the moment that they are rescued, they realize what they have become. Slowly they lose their innocence and common sense when they give into their desires and fears which are only images in their head which lead them to their actions. The boys are manipulated by one who knows how to use fear against them and lead them into killing the others who were perceived as threat in the competition - Jack.
Where is evil in the story? In which way is evil connected with the pig's head?
The first time evil appears in the story is with the first death. The death of the little boy with one side of his face blotted out by a mulberry - colored birthmark. He was the first one who talked about a kind of beastie and he had fear of it. This is what after will be a common feeling among all the children. Also, he announced what will happen later in the novel - the monster. This is the first time when Jack felt powerful and in this way he has an excuse to give more importance to hunting:
"Ralph's right of course. There isn't a snake-thing. But if there was a snake we'd hunt it and kill it. We're going to hunt pigs to get meat for everybody. And we'll look for the snake too ----"
