Lord of the Flies
In the allegory Lord of the Flies by William Golding, society was formed and collapsed due to savagery. To have a society, there needs to be complex rules, an established government, a leader and an organization of jobs. The boys on the island tried to build civilization but their natural instincts drove them to violent behavior. The boys try to make a set of rules and people have certain jobs, but the boys do not want to listen to the elected leader, Ralph. People had different schedules and priorities in mind which caused conflict and tension between the boys because nobody could agree. The boys who were considered the hunters turned to savagery because people were craving meat so the hunters were trying to capture a pig. Meanwhile, Ralph and the rational thinkers thought that having rules and a signal fire were the priorities. Over time, conflict and tension rose, and Ralph could not keep control. In human societies, the rule of law protects women and children and men who are not the dominant, brutal, or aggressive fighters. It would start to turn into natural selection because the weak would be killed off leaving only the savage and strong people to ruin the rest of the society.
Although certain rules or laws may not be fair and affect some individuals, the rules are made to keep order in check. Individuals need restrictions because without them, people would not know limits and try to do as they please. Rules can prevent individuals from attainting their full potential because they may not get to be heard and are not able to share thoughts and feelings. Leaders try to make decisions that work for people overall, but not everyone will get what they want. That is why citizens in a society need to give and take because they need to learn that needs and wants are not guaranteed.
Without rulers to lead, society would turn to chaos since people would fight for themselves. What could happen is society would resort to every man for himself to survive and then no control could be sustained. People would listen; because of the realization that there are no rules and could do anything without being reprimanded. Frequent fights between groups and individuals due to differences could happen. As a result, wars would become a common occurrence because a greater number of people would start fighting. People would let out their inner evil and begin relying on survival of fittest. Golding believes that everyone has an inner evil and when necessary, the evil would come out and there would be conflict. Individuals would attempt to be their own leaders which would only cause multiple conflicts.
It is extremely important for citizens in a society have limitations and rules to keep them sane and from trying to fend for themselves. Rules and laws play a tremendous role because they have to be made to keep order and control between people in societies. Although there will be people who do not agree with the rules, there will be consequences if rules are not followed. Without the leaders and laws, people would be stuck fending for themselves and most will not know what to do except fight since it is human instinct.
