This paper will examine the roles and responsibilities of organizational managers and leaders in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. I will also differentiate between management and leadership within AT&T as well as describe the roles in which both managers and leaders play in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. I will go on to explain how the leading function of management supports the creation and maintenance of a healthy organizational culture within AT&T. Leaders have a great influence on others. According to the University of Phoenix Week 4 Overview (2008), “outstanding leaders combine good strategic substance and effective interpersonal processes to formulate and implement strategies that produce results and sustainable competitive advantage”.
Within AT&T, both managers and team leads play a role in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture. Often, people tend to senselessly act out of ethnocentrism, which is “the tendency to judge others by the standards of one’s group or culture, which are seen as superior,” (University of Phoenix, 2008). This type of behavior reflects negatively on an organization. Managers and team leads within AT&T are supposed to reflect the personality of the organization and support the overall goals. For example, within my organization at AT&T, it is very important that we make every effort to get a customer’s circuit fully operational within the three-hour time frame that we guarantee our customers. To do this involves extreme maneuverings from several different individual within the organization. Both managers and team leads are taking action to ensure this is done.
A good leader will motivate the employees to want to follow suite in trying to obtain this goal. This entails the leading function of management, which “involves the manager’s efforts to stimulate high performance by employees” (University of Phoenix, 2008). Within AT&T, conducting monthly performance evaluations on employees give managers the opportunity to point out employees’ strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvements to enable that employee to continue to grow. This supports the creation and maintenance of a healthy organizational culture within the company. This way the employees can see where they stand and what direction they need to be moving towards in order to support the organization’s goal. A clear visual of what target is trying to be reached aids the employees at AT&T.
