For the field research of OTC remedies, our group chose Nyquil Cold and Flu liquid capsules. To conduct our research on our Nyquil brand, we visited two different retail locations; a grocery store (Sobeys) and a drugstore (Lawton’s Drug). What we found in terms of product, price, promotion and place of Nyquil Cold and Flu liquid capsules at these two locations shared some similarities and differences.
Our Product
As the name suggests, Nyquil Cold and Flu is a liquid capsule OTC remedy for multi-symptoms of cold and flu. On the front face of the box, it is written that Nyquil is a multi-symptom relief which contains: antihistamine, cough suppressant, pain relief and fever reduction. When I was in the store looking for our brand, I found myself hunched over on my knees to be able to get a good look at the selection of Nyquil products that were available. As far as shelf placement goes, Advil had the shelves above Nyquil, with Tylenol having their own separate shelving space off to the side. Having these shelf spaces made Advil and Tylenol products made them easily noticeable to the eye and easier to find.
As far as price, they varied among the different packages in which the Nyquil Cold and Flu liquid capsules were offered in. Here are the prices of Nyquil and few of their competitors:
Brand | Prices($) |
Nyquil C&F (16pc.) | 7.99 (on for 6.99) |
Nyquil C&F (24pc.) | 11.99 |
Advil C&F (20pc.) | 9.99 |
Benylin All in One liquidcaps | 10.99 |
Compliments C&F | 6.99 |
Tylenol C&S | 7.49 |

As it is noted from the table above, Nyquil Cold and Flu liquidcaps are among the cheapest cold and flu remedies found at Sobeys. It was also the only cold and flu medication found that had a sale of a dollar.
Lawton’s (drugstore):
The cold and flu remedies were found directly in front of the pharmacy counters. There were various brands that were found among Nyquil.

As consistent with the findings at Sobeys grocery, Nyquil was found on the shelf 3rd from the bottom. However, it was also noted that there were many more variety of Nyquil brands next to and below the shelf where the Nyquil C&F remedy was found. Also consistent with the findings at Sobeys, Tylenol and Advil controlled the entire first two shelves and I found myself again having to hunched down to be able to analyze the Nyquil boxes.
The prices were found to be more expensive than Sobeys grocery, but Nyquil still among the cheapest from its competitors. Here are some of the prices found:
Brands | Prices ($) |
Nyquil C&F (16pc.) | 8.59 |
Nyquil C&F (24pc.) | 11.59 |
Compliments C&F | 6.49 |
