Modifying Behavior in Children
Dealing with children that have behavioral issues can be challenging for parents, teachers, and others, which is why knowing different methods for modifying behavior in children can be an asset. In this article three methods for modifying behavior will be looked at, Mindfulness Training, Cognitive Control Therapy, and Behavioral Consultation. These methods will be defined, explained how they are implemented, and the way these methods differ from one another.

By bringing the mind back to that part of the body, an individual can effectively change at will, the setting event for his or her thoughts, feelings, emotion, etc. By bringing the mind to the soles of the feet, the individual is able to anchor the mind on a neutral setting event and be in the present moment.

Cognitive Control Therapy
Cognitive Control Therapy (CCT) was used in this study to modify the behavior of children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The CCT instructs children in strategies that facilitate their ability to acquire and organize information more effectively. The intervention entailed remediation of five metacognitive control domains, by increasing children’s awareness of and effective use of key cognitive strategies including: body position and movements and self-awareness; focal attention; processing information in the presence of distraction stimuli, controlling external information, and categorizing information. According to the children’s teacher, qualitative improvements in academic achievement, writing and communication skills improved. The therapist reported improvements in self-efficacy, motivation, self-confidence, and emotionality.
Behavioral Consultation. It is helpful to think of the environment as an external nervous system of the child, a place where external supports implemented bolster the deficit areas of the child (Kalberg). Families Moving Forward (FMF) is a method devised to support families raising children with FASD. The intervention was designed to increase parental self-efficacy and reduce child behavior problems by providing guidance and instruction to parents and caregivers in the use of strategies that change the environment to reduce behavior triggers. FMF seeks to modify some of the cognitions and attitudes that may underlie negative parenting responses in children. Direct support and coaching is provided to the families, consultation to school personnel and community resources.
