First, Thiago Silva said he submitted an altered specimen in order to cover the fact that he had used PEDs, He took the steroids to recover from injuries that were not in his control: determinism. Secondly, Thiago showed great determination to the sport of MMA and to his fans; he may have thought the use of steroids would help him further his career and bring excitement to his fans; he was also under pressure to obtain the light heavy weight title: drive. Third, he must have been in great conflict with what he should and should not do but he may have felt the need to succeed for his camp, family and fans: conflict. Finally, the worst contributing factor for Thiago could have been an unconscious one; maybe he had issues from his past that he did not even realize were helping him make decisions, such as: a possible fear of failure or incompetence: unconscious.
The humanistic views believe that we are motivated by a higher purpose. The reasons behind Thiago’s actions might be for selfish reasons; perhaps he is trying to feel accomplished or to fill a void in his life. His reasoning and his desires for whatever it may be are not as easy to determine as others, he competes in a sport where 99% of the athletes are using PEDs and perhaps feels that his skill set alone will not take him to the heights he hopes to be.
Lastly, we have the diversity theory. The diversity theory of motivation proposes behavior stems from humans who are motivated by a large diversity of things. In order to determine what motivates one person we have no other choice but to take into account what that person has stated. Each person is different, with different goals, dreams, and aspirations, and yes, with different motivators. There are many elements that may have contributed to Thiago’s decision, but in the end we are left with only one and that is the competition.
