Motivational Methods
It is the conscientiousness of the manager to ensure their team is in high spirits. No matter how superfluous a job is, a manager must always encourage their team to be highly productive and successful. Managers are mentors, they are there to guide, encourage and educate nothing more and nothing less. “If you're finding it particularly difficult to concentrate on what someone is saying, try repeating their words mentally as they say them – this will reinforce their message and help you stay focused (Manktelow, 2012)”. Simple nonverbal gestures such as eye contact, occasional nod of the head, open posture and a smile will also convey to the speaker that you are paying attention. When providing feedbacks summarize what the speaker just said; what I'm hearing is." and "sounds like you are saying." are great ways to reflect back. Always wait until the speaker is finished talking before speaking up, defer judgment. Always treat employees the way they should be treated, with respect. With this change employees can become empowered; this will boost morale and essentially create a more peaceful atmosphere with open communication.
Often times managers fail to recognize the need of their employees unless it is said directly to them. Abraham Maslow developed a theory of motivation based on 5 needs; Self-actualization needs, esteem needs, social needs, safety needs and physiological needs. A person may not be motivated to work if their basic needs are not fulfilled. Physiological needs are those basic needs in which we need to survive or depend on for energy. As a manager providing breaks for refreshments, not requiring permission to use the restroom, comfort at their work space and providing accommodations in the event the team has to work late for a deadline are fundamental human skills. Once these needs are met, the security of an employee is of concern, ensuring their benefits are covered is of high importance. Base pay, medical, dental and safe working conditions are vital to motivate employees to stay at their current job. “The progression principle holds that a need at one level does not become activated until the next lower level need is already satisfied “(Lombardi & Schermerhorn, 2007). There are other needs that reflect on a person’s needs but they come from other people. The social need is simple; a person must feel comfortable in order to work in a cohesive environment, providing the foundation for friendly co worker interaction will influence team work, influence positive attitudes towards others and makes for a pleasant work environment. Building self esteem not only shows appreciation for an employee’s hard work but showing them appreciation will motivate him/her to go above and beyond in their position. Challenging employees and reinforcing faith in their growth will fulfill their self-actualization needs. Asking for their insight with decision making while maintain respect will allow for a more creative work atmosphere. Enforcing this method my not only strengthens a team, it may strengthen relationships between the team therefore, amplifying effective and productive team work. Managers may also learn lessons that will come useful in the future when they continue to raise in his/her career.
