My Passion For Making Collages Essay

1021 words - 5 pages

I have never felt like I have been a part of any sort of social order, be it a school, church, neighborhood, club, a group of friends, or even my own family. Perhaps this is because, not only am I anti-social, but I am a collector: a collector of ideas and passions. My collection is ever changing and ever contradictory. My interests are to varying and eclectic to fit into one synonymous, orderly whole that can slide nicely into one clique's stereotype. I am always adding to my collection and always pealing and shedding overused/underused or unneeded skins. My collection is and never will be complete; for I have yet to even give it a name and a central theme is definitely lacking. I cannot ...view middle of the document...

I would browse through my boxes of severed beauties, torn from their fragrant homes between leaflets of couture until I would find pieces that a particular friend would appreciate. These would then be placed together in manner which was hopefully to their liking.

I would find myself stealing Smithsonians from my school counselor's waiting room if they contained pictures that I just had to have in them. Once during a trip to San Francisco, I withstood carrying ten pounds worth of magazines up and down Haight Street all day that I had purchased at a garage sale there. Is this just another hobby? No; it has become more.

During the past few months, making collages has started to develop into an outlet of expression for me. And through this transformation, a difference in their style can be noticed. Now as I dissect seemingly incongruous images, though fitting the pieces together is still as difficult as ever, the end product reflects a little more of myself then past collages. Now they reflect my experiences and emotions. Before I would just make collages with central themes that looked nice but didn't mean anything to me. With this change of attitude, I have noticed that the end product looks more artistic and I have more of a sense of accomplishment. This is not to say that creating them has become any easier.

I have come to a point where I need to replenish my collage making supplies. My bottle of Modge Podge is dry and cracking. My lovely paper slicer has become sticky and littered...
