My Potentian Career In Business Essay

1792 words - 8 pages

Have you ever wondered what you were going to do with your life? I know I have. Before I attended Business Horizons, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living or what classes I wanted to take in college. Thanks to Business Horizons, I finally have discovered something I would enjoy. I plan to have a career in business and major in business and economics. To explain how I came to this decision, I need to explain the events that occurred at Business Horizons that led up to my decision. All of the activities at Business Horizons, the teambuilding activities, the simulations, the lectures, and the making and marketing of my Industry’s product, helped me come to the conclusion that I ...view middle of the document...

I was thinking that it would be a bit boring, to tell the truth, but I was wrong. One of the first activities we did at Business Horizons was a teambuilding activity that helped us get to know the other members of our Industry. Next, we were sent to our first Industry meeting and introduced to the MESE game. Some of the other people in my Industry were a bit confused by the game, but I liked it. After only the first decision we made, I already had a plan for success to win the simulation. Overall, the plan paid off when the economy crashed and everyone else was loosing money. My team was still making money at an incredible rate and we rocketed from second to last place to fourth place in only about a year. I discovered that I was good at business strategy. We next moved on to our first lecture, where we learned about creativity in business. I had enjoyed the Industry meeting, but I was prepared to sit through a boring lecture on business. Again, I was very wrong. The first thing our speaker did was engage the audience and get our attention. He was such a good speaker that he managed to keep our attention throughout the whole lecture and managed to actually teach us quite a lot about business, too. At that point I was starting to change my mind about Business Horizons and business in general. Following the lecture, we were sent to the Great Hall and told to build something out of junk that we could market and sell as a viable product and we only had ten minutes to do it. Needless to say, most Industries’ products looked like piles of trash, but over the week all seven Industries managed to fix our products enough that the final results were products that actually looked good. After only one day at Business Horizons I had already changed my mind about business and decided to do something with my life that had to do with business, because I had discovered that business could be fun.
Out of all those events, however, what most convinced me to have a career in business was the MESE game. The Management and Economics Simulation Exercise was a computer program designed to simulate the management of a small business. Every three months in the simulation, a progress report would come in showing the results of the last quarter’s economic decisions. It showed each company’s profits, their debts, the number of units that their factories produced, how many orders were made for their product, etc. After reading the progress report, I and the other three members of my team had to decide on the new price of our product, how many units we wanted our factories to produce, and the amount of money we would spend on marketing, capital investment, and research and development. Our decisions would then be sent to the main office and entered into the computer. The computer would simulate how the economy of the next three months would fluctuate and how that and the other teams’ decisions would affect my team’s business. We would then...
