Nikola Tesla
We all use electricity every day. Many everyday items that use electricity would not be possible without the inventions and genius of Nikola Tesla.
Nikola Tesla was born in Smilijan, Lika in Croatia. He was born on July 10, 1856. His father was a priest and his mother was an inventor. Even at an early age, Tesla had an amazing mind, he had a photographic memory and memorized entire books. Starting in his childhood and continuing on through adulthood, Tesla was plagued by a condition where he would be blinded by brilliant flashes of light. When Edison realized that Tesla’s method worked better, he refused to pay Tesla the money he had agreed to, lest Tesla get all the recognition. Soon after, Tesla quit and went to find other work where he would be more appreciated. After that point, Edison spent the rest of his life discrediting and obscuring Tesla. As it happens, AC is the method of electrical energy transfer we use today.
In the year 1882 Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field. A rotating magnetic field is a magnetic field which changes direction at a constant rate. He used this principal and adapted it to use in his AC generators and also to his ideas for an induction motor. In 1888 he presented his ideas for the AC generator to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. They loved it and the result was a US patent and a partnership between Tesla and George Westinghouse, the founder of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
In 1891 Tesla became a United States citizen. At that time he was at the height of his inventing career developing things in rapid succession. In the year 1891, he also invented the Tesla Coil, one of his most famous inventions. The Tesla coil is a type of resonant transformer circuit that produces high voltage electricity. It is used in radio and television sets as well as all sorts of other electrical equipment.
One of the reasons Tesla came to America was because he wanted to harness the power of Niagara Falls in order to make electrical energy. In the year 1895, he did just that and was the first man to build a hydro-electric power plant that generated alternating current at Niagara Falls. This was also the first large scale AC generator. As a result, the King of Motenegro gave to Tesla the Order of Prince Danilo which is an award given for a distinguished accomplishment.
