Unit 20. Principles of Assessment in Lifelong Learning James Gunn

In this assignment I’m going to explain how I understand the principles of assessment in Lifelong Learning and how they are applied in relation to my teaching. Assessment is used to find out if your learners have actually learned what is being taught to them and if they have the required knowledge to pass any exams set for them as well as the skills required for their chosen career if the course is vocational. Initial assessment is what takes place either before the course starts and can be done informally by just talking to the learner, using interviews for example or by the use of formal assessment such as a written test. This is a way of understanding what the students already know and is a way of ‘recognising prior learning’ (RPL) which can be used to set the learner an individual learning programme (ILP); a programme measured to the particular needs of that student. Individual goals can be set for the student to achieve during the course as each student learns at a differing pace. Goals should not be set too high, as these may seem unachievable. Setting smaller, more achievable goals will encourage and motivate the student more to achieve them. Other forms of initial assessment that can take place once the course starts are; question and answer sessions, Icebreakers, group discussion followed by a multiple choice question sheet and V.A.R.K. questionnaires which are used to determine how each individual learns best and what their particular learning style is. Learning programmes can then be tailored to include all the different learning styles; visual, aural, read/write and kinaesthetic and by using methods more associated to the most prominent learning styles of the group.
Formative assessment is assessment that takes place continuously during the course and will show you how your learner’s are developing. Assessment methods that can be used to show how the are developing and if they have an understanding of something you have just done are ‘question and answer’ sessions, gap fill exercises or quizzes. Using a differing range of assessment methods makes sure you include all the different learning styles as well as making the learning more fun. By assessing your learners on a regular basis this allows you to see if the are ready for any type of summative assessment.
