Online Dating: Why to Stay Away
In a world where everything is based on technology, it is no big surprise that dating has been moving to the internet. Using the internet to find a potential match has made dating easier, but it also is something to stay away from because dating websites are full of lies, predators, and misrepresentations. The popularity of Internet dating sites has added to this new way of getting to know someone. Nowadays, you can find dating websites for almost any interest. Whether you are just looking for a casual relationship, or have some specific spiritual, lifestyle, or other need, there is someone out there for you who is just a few mouse clicks away. 156). While misrepresentations are abundant in the social world, they also indicate that a person cannot be trusted if they feel the need to lie about insignificant details. The whole point of the dating process is to get to know someone and if the relationship starts out with lies, no matter how small they may be, the participants are being set up for failure.
Online dating profiles are made by each person to help match them to the person of their dreams. The problem with this is that, while it is rare, people lie on these profiles. These lies are larger than misrepresentations and tend to include things such as not telling the truth about their marital status and whether or not they have children. A series of studies funded in part by the National Science Foundation found that eight out of ten people life somewhere on their online dating profiles (McCarthy, 2011, p. 156). According to research done by David Brooks (2011), about a fifth of online daters are men that are actually already married (p. 320). The world of technology has made it so simple for a person to present themselves as whoever they want to be, and no one will ever know the difference. Overall, Internet daters that participated in the online dating study done by Cornell University reported that it was generally unacceptable to lie in online dating profiles. In general, participants told experimenters that it was least acceptable to lie about education and relationship status, and most acceptable to lie about income and interests. Men and women differed somewhat in what types of lies were socially acceptable. Male online daters agreed that it was least acceptable to lie about whether or not you were in a relationship or had children, but believed that it is relatively acceptable to lie about income, occupation, politics, and interests (Toma, 2008). Despite the fact that most people think that lying to a potential match is morally wrong, it still happens in an alarming number of dating profiles. Everything comes down to the fact that it is impossible to tell if someone is being truthful about themselves via the internet.
The biggest reason that people should stay away from online dating websites is that it has the potential for being very dangerous. An online dating website is like a dark alley, you never know what is going to come out of the shadows and cause you harm. Predators tend to run amuck on these sites and men are more likely to be looking for sex (Brooks,...
