What is organizational behavior? Organizational behavior, or OB, is nothing more than the study of how the impact that individuals, groups, and organizational structure has on the behavior within an organization. Organizational behavior is used to apply that knowledge toward maximizing the effectiveness of an organization. Organizational behavior is considered a field of study, so it has its own terminology and covers multiple areas of expertise like anthropology, sociology, psychology, and social psychology. Management enforces the company’s organizational culture. If the culture of the middle management is lax, so will the organizations’.

Diversity

When a person thinks of diversity, the first thing that comes to mind is affirmative action. While this is a true statement, there are many different aspects of diversity that affect a company. Workforce diversity is the idea that organizations are becoming more varied in terms of inclusion of diverse groups. The workforce is now comprised of more people who differ in race, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, age, and disability. Organizational Behavior is used to help people to understand how one can value these differences rather than fear, fight, or ignore them. Organizations can improve quality and productivity by improving customer service, and people skills. Diversity can help stimulate innovation and change, allow employees to work in networked organizations, help employees balance work-life conflicts, create a positive work environment, and improve ethical behavior.

Communication

Ever since the first human attempted to exchange a thought or idea to another, communication between people or groups has been a challenge. While the need to communicate has not changed from day one, the method of that exchange of ideas has. In today’s global economy, the ability to communicate effectively is more important than ever.
