What are organizations like in the new workplace?-Organizations in the new workplace are challenging but also great opportunities for making real and positive contributions to society.-Organizations are the principal source of careers and one's economic livelihood. (Therefore, it is important to study them and see how they function)-Some of the skills that are needed to survive and thrive within an organization include: mastery, contracts, entrepreneurship, love of technology, marketing, passion of renewal. (See chart p. 12)So, What is an Organization?-An organization is a collection of people working together to achieve a common purpose.-From society's standpoint, the purpose of any organization is to provide useful good/services that return value to society and satisfy consumers' need and wants in order to justify its continued existence. ...view middle of the document...

-The external environment is important to the organization because it acts as a supplier of resources and a source of consumers.-So in any organization the consumer is king because the minute an organization produces something that a consumer does not want, it will be difficult to operate or stay in business over the long run.-For an organization to perform well resources must be used well and the customers must be happy. This is known as value creation.-If the organization can add value to the original cost of its resource inputs (finished product is something that society thinks its valuable) then:A. A business organization can earn a profit (selling price=more than cost of producing item).B. A non-profit organization can add wealth to a society (provide a public service that is worth more than its cost).-In order to see if an organization is adding value to society, the organization must measure (test) its performance.-One of the best ways to see if the organization is doing well is to see if it is productive. Productivity is the quantity (how much) and quality (how good) of work performance with resource utilization taken into account.-In management, productivity is measured in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.-Performance effectiveness is a measure of task output or goal accomplishment. (Meeting or exceeding goals). An example of this is you set a goal of 70% in this course, if you get 70 or above, you are effective.-All organizations strive to be efficient AND effective. (Produce a high number of quality goods without wasting any resources.)-Organizations are constantly changing. In order to make sure that an organization is creating value in society they must introduce change.-To conclude, organizations must create value for their customers or they will cease to exist. This has created a new type of organizational goal called Total Quality Management (TQM). TQM involves managing with an organization-wide commitment to continuous improvement and meeting customer needs completely.
