Over Seven Weeks Essay

2427 words - 10 pages

Over the last seven weeks, class in ECET 230 has been extremely insightful. I have learned a great deal of information that I can and will use in my future classes and/or career. For example during week 1 we learned about arithmetic circuits and the adding/subtracting of binary numbers. The first thing that we went over was the basic rules of dealing with binary numbers. First thing is when you are adding them, 1+1=1 0 not 2, 1+1+1=1 1 not 3, however 0+1 still equals 1 and 0+0 still does equal 0. When dealing with binary numbers the only numbers used is 1 and 0. That means that for example 1111 = 15 and another example 10000101 = 128 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 133.

The Full Adder circuit adds three one-bit binary numbers and outputs two one-bit binary numbers, a sum and a carry.   The full-adder is usually a component in a cascade of adders, which add 8, 16, 32, etc. binary numbers.  The carry input for the full-adder circuit is from the carry output from the circuit "above" itself in the cascade.  The carry output from the full adder is fed to another full adder "below" itself in the cascade.
Week one was pretty much reveal of what we learnt in previous classes. We went over the basics from binary numbers to Four Bit binary adder circuits. The four bit binary circuit can be utilized as an adder-subtractor by making use of the fact that adding the 2’s complement of one number to another is equivalent to subtracting that number from the other number. Basically stating that 4-7 is the same as 7+ (-7), where the -7 is displayed in 2’s complement format.
In week two we discussed decoders, encoders, multiplexers, and demultiplexers. According to the Encarta dictionary, decode means, “to find the direct meaning of cryptic or indirect language.” Decoders are used to breakdown hide items, whether it be hidden words in mixed up words, or the breaking down of complex numbers. The most commonly used decoder is the octal decoder, with three inputs and eight outputs. Then of course there is BCD which stands for binary-code decimal and is extensively used with applications that require the outputs to be in decimal form, such as calculators. BCD decoders are different than the usual decoders since they only have 10 inputs, representing the digital numbers 0-9. The next decoder us seven-segment displays, which its name pretty explains what the purpose of this decoder. This decoder has a display that is made up of 7 individual LED bars, and they are designated with the letters A through G. Encoders are basically the reverse of decoders. They will take ordinary text and transform it so that it becomes encrypted. Multiplexers sometimes known as data selectors are one of the most widely used logic functions. They are simply switches, which allow an output to be a selected input. Demultiplexer has the same relation to multiplexers as encoders to decoders, meaning that they are to the opposite operation. They are often referred to as data distributors or data steering logic, it inputs a signal, or string of signals, and outputs to an assigned location.
In week 3 we touched bases with VHDL, PLDs, and HDLs. This in my opinion was properly the most important week. If we didn’t understand the information that was covered during this week, then would not have been able to properly complete and understand the labs that followed. Let’s consider this, the most common method of design entry that is used now-a-days is known as text design using what is known as Hardware Descriptive Language (HDL), which replaced schematic capture. This usage allows digital systems to be designated and debugged at a conceptual level before...
