Grenouille, the main character from the book Perfume, has views very much alike the incredible and famous artist Michelangelo. Like Michelangelo, Grenouille is an artist. Grenouille is in fact not a malicious murder but rather inspired artist. Grenouille is just trying to find new ways to get the world down in perfume, rather than paint, in his own terms. Why is it wrong for Grenouille to do the same? Without the scent of the virgins Grenouille would not be able to create his masterpiece, his perfume. Grenouille also never wastes this smell. Like all good artwork Grenouille respects and treasures the smells he takes from the virgins. He does not waste it. He never kills more then he must. “He saw himself shaking the last drops from the bottle, rinsing the flacon with alcohol so that the last bit would not be lost (Süskind 221).” Grenouille only kills for artistic purposes. This is the reason he never actually rapes any of his virgins he takes scent from. He only wants their scent and like Picasso he believes lives can be sacrificed in exchange for fine art.
“He would make a perfume using all the precepts of the art, and scent of the girl behind the wall would be the very soul of it” (Süskind 224).” Notice that Süskind chooses to call perfumery is an art form. Süskind also tells us that Grenouille will use and follow all the rules of perfumery.
