Personal Ethics Statement.
I describe ethics as the values we possess integrated with our actions. Obtaining, identifying, and utilizing honest ethical behavior is a key component to academic and personal success. Knowing how to apply your ethical behavior to situations, academic or personal will aid an individual to manage a successful life. The true need for sound ethical behavior is the cornerstone to the foundation of a person’s character. Character is ethical behavior combined with choices and that is what defines us as individuals. I believe the Internet has made the discovery of plagiarism easier, as well as increasing the probability of compromising one’s integrity. Today my ethical awareness is at the forefront of my academic career and I must be vigilant.
My preferred ethical lens is a dual lens and they are Right- Responsible and Results lens. By having a dual lens I am able to balance my reasoning skills and my intuition to help me manage my duties. I seek to uncover the greatest good and make it available to all. I feel that my personal ethical lens portrays me to be for the best interest of others as long as they are capable of doing this same for each other and for me.
My core values speak of prioritizing autonomy over equality. My values show signs that my ethical behavior favors protecting individual’s rights and state that this is best for the community. My classical values are temperance and prudence. This expresses that I will put duties before pleasure and use foresight along with wisdom in practical matters.
My key phrase is “I make responsible choices that are good for everyone.” I make the assumption that each person operates from a clear sense of their own values as I do, that’s where I start to become rigid in my thinking. I feel that this is where I believe my ethical values change in a direction that I am uncomfortable with.
My Shortcomings are revealed with my “Risk”. According to my autonomous section of my lens I expect everyone to do things my way. I run the risk of becoming cruel in order to make everyone think as I think. Because of my expectations of others I run the risk of reducing decisions to a narrow analysis. I will tend to cut corners and now I’m getting really uncomfortable of my ethical behavior.
This brings me to another ethical deficiency, my “Blind spot”. My bind spot speaks of the inability to be accountable to those who are depending upon me.
