The thing that I can think of best describes my personal identity is basketball. Basketball can be played inside or outside in the hot or cold during the day time or at night. Basketball has been around for many many years and is now played by everyone around the world. And now it is a sport that brings different cultures together. The author Joel L. Swerdlow wrote an essay entitled “Changing America” and in this essay he tells how students from many different cultures and backgrounds are in high school. This high school is named J. E. B. Stuart High School which is located in Virginia. Now many years later most of the student body at J. E. B. Stuart are kids from all over the world. The reason I choose basketball as a personal identity Swerdlow is telling how different students try to get along with other ...view middle of the document...
Basketball and Swerdlow's essay both have lots of similar struggles when they came to America and went to J. E. B. Stuart they had to learn English which they taught English as a second language, when basketball player come to America they also must learn English as their second language so they can interact with the players on their team.
My personal identity was based on my athletic ability and that why I have chosen basketball because to play you have to be very athletic. I have been playing basketball since I was like 5 years of age. I have video footage of me playing at all different ages. I love showing my emotions through basketball, it lets you release anger that you have. It also brings joy to you.
Symbols I can use to describe basketball would be the uniform and/or basketball jersey. Of course the ball would be a big symbol without the ball you cant express yourself how you would want to. Your shoes without the right kind of shoes you cant play. The main symbol of basketball is the basketball court, the court is where everything goes down at all the plays all the shots you take, and all the emotion goes down on the basketball court.
Abstract feelings I have when playing basketball is fearlessness, because if you fear something you will not be successful in it. Sometimes I get the sense that I am playing by myself even though I be in the middle of a game. While playing the game you to make sure that you keep your head and stay under control even though you might want to show your anger stay calm there is always another play ahead of you.
Basketball may not be for you, but if you get out there an try I grantee you have you will have a great time. And like I said early in this essay all ethnics, cultures, and sexes can play it is not meant for just one type of person anyone can do it. Just get out there and play an see if you have the same feelings I have when I am playing.
