Introduction to Personality
Personality psychology is the study of personality and the individual differences between human beings. The construction of logical interpretations of individuals and their major psychological processes are the objectives personality psychologists strive to attain from the human perspective. It is difficult to define personality it encompasses so many different aspects of the human psyche. However, in this paper personality will be defined, approaches in studying personality will be looked at and factors that influence an individual’s personality discussed.

A few of the main theories that aim to explain personality are the psychoanalytical theory, the humanistic theory, and the observational learning theory. The psychoanalytic theory is the method of psychological therapy originated by Sigmund Freud in which free association, dream interpretation, and analysis of resistance and transference are used to explore repressed or unconscious impulses, anxieties, and internal conflicts, in order to free psychic energy for mature love and work. The theory of personality developed by Freud that focuses on repression and unconscious forces and includes the concepts of infantile sexuality, resistance, transference, and division of the psyche into the id, ego, and superego (Farflex, 2013).
The humanistic theory of Maslow believed that all of us can be self- actualizing; our human nature carries with it tremendous potential for being a good human being.
