Good day class. Good day professor. My name is Jatanie Jonas and today I ask you, is Sexual Harassment a problem for men as well as women? It is often stated that sexual harassment of a man by a woman is silly at best, dangerous at worst. After all, everyone knows sexual harassment is something a man does to a woman. This assumption is reflected in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's guidelines on sexual harassment, where the harasser is always a “he” and the victim a “she.” But in the opposition, many believe that the issue of sexual harassment is not about gender or sexual orientation. The second thing necessary to significantly reduce harassment in the workplace is effective action by managers. No matter how many workplace codes of conduct we have, harassment will continue until all levels of management are committed to doing effective prevention, responding appropriately, and setting an example. But in the case of management inaction, even though that manager may mean well, they simply may not have the training necessary to intervene effectively. They are concerned, but haven't developed the skill set to respond. This paves the way for the third step, awareness. The current education on sexual harassment is simply not effective. Many employees have no training in harassment other than being tossed a manual or pointed to some on-line information. In other cases where there is training, it is inadequate and often boring. Complex problems are reduced to simplistic lists of dos and don'ts. We must begin to revamp the approaches to workplace training. Such training must be designed to be engaging and even entertaining. This training must focus on the nuances of harassment and on the underlying gender issues. Once we do more effective training and give managers a better understanding of the issue and the skills to deal with it, we will have workplaces that are more productive,...
