According to Kellough and Kellough, "Teaching and learning are reciprocal processes that depend on and affect one another. Thus, the assessment component deals with how well the students are learning and how well the teacher is teaching" (Kellough et al, 1999). Assessment is acknowledged as a key driver for student learning and as tutors and students spend a great deal of their time dealing with assessment, it is important to reflect on its place and purpose in education. The initial assessment can take the form of questions and answers as part of icebreaker activities or open group discussion of previous knowledge. Alternatively, individually completed quizzes or tests in the first week of teaching are a useful way to assess need and prepare students for the structure of ongoing assessment over the course duration. On the business management course assessment records begin during session one with an icebreaker to determine prior experience and open discussion on what business means for individuals within the group.
However, there are also negatives of initial assessment. Heywood (l989) suggests that some traditional methods of assessment, for example, tutor marked examinations are unreliable; he added that those results are not consistent with repeated applications. Several studies have shown that not only can the same candidate be given different marks by two different tutors but also the same tutor may give different marks to the same candidate when the same paper is remarked (Heywood, op cit). In fact, one of the major arguments for reforming assessment is the unreliability of some of the more traditional assessment practices. It is hardly fair for tutors to question whether students can reliably assess themselves when it has been demonstrated that tutor-marked assessments are themselves prone to a lack of consistency.
