Different personalities of team members influence team dynamics and performance. Varying levels of motivation can change team objectives, and work satisfaction can translate in how the team successfully or unsuccessfully accomplishes the intended purpose. A working knowledge of how these factors can influence a team’s performance is an immense asset for managers and team leaders to understand. Attitudes can lead to emotional concerns in the workplace. Emotions drive people to decisions and affect they way individuals approach different topics. Emotions also affect creativity, productivity, and team success; because of this it is important for leadership to properly manage the different emotional concerns of the team as everyone works together, and ensure the team remains goal focused. Emotion can be described as "energy in motion” When people feel happy and excited, they have far more energy at their disposal than depressed or disinterested people will (Lee). Therefore, an emotionally healthy team will be much more motivated, satisfied, and productive. Simply stated the happier an employee is, the harder he or she will work to ensure team success. Team leadership will encourage an open and inviting environment among team members, where individuals are expected to communicate freely and discuss any concerns that may arise throughout the project from inception to completion.
Emotions and attitudes are both part of what makes up individual personalities, which also have an effect on team dynamics. Building and cultivating relationships is part of what make makes team synergy grow in to a productive cohesive unit. Anytime a group of individuals is brought together in an attempt to form a team personalities must be addressed first. According to personality expert, Professor John Mayer, “personality is the organized, developing, system within the individual that represents the collective action of that individual’s major psychological subsystems.” In layman’s terms personality as that fundamental driver of how individuals act.
