Harrison-Keyes is a global publisher of print products for scientific, technical and business books and journals, professional and consumer books, textbooks and other educational materials for all levels of study and holds about 22,700 active titles and publishes about 2000 new titles each year. Communication seems to be an important element of stagnation of the project. The company has communication problems due to time zones and organizational culture. Dealing with the current culture of India (Asia Digital Publishing [ADP]) has problems within itself. India does not work like the United States and believes only on a set work schedule. Harrison-Keys will need to learn from this and work a solution that meets the needs of that particular organizational culture. This particular problem can cause a cross-cultural conflict on business decisions. Cross-cultural conflict is immediate and huge because of the different assumptions about how to think and act (Kinicki and Kreitner, 2004, p. 493).
One of Harrison-Keys’ best author, Will Harper, Pulitzer Prize winner, is looking to move to another publishing company because his concerns over piracy are not being addresses. Harrison-Keys will need to collaborate with Will Harper and other authors to reach a solution that best fits the new vision of the organization. Collaboration offers the best chance of reaching mutually satisfactory solutions based on the ideas and interests of all parties, and of maintaining and strengthening work relationships (Batemen and Snell, 2004, p. 445). Meg McGill feels that the only way for Harrison-Keys to succeed is to having everything digital. Jan Peters is the person that is the head of the implementation team and Pete Ross in the person in charge of production. These personalities are very strong in the way the believe things should be accomplish for the organization. Each person needs to find a way to work together because personality conflicts come from the unique way each person reacts to each other depends in part on our personality or what other might describe as a particular style (Kinicki and Kreitner, 2003, p. 490).
Another issue and opportunity for Harrison-Keys is to implement a company wide strategy for the new initiative of creating e-books and e-publishing. The implementation plan will need to be accepted by all departments of the organization and create an opportunity for the company in gaining short term wins, a consensus on the strategy, and having an awards system. There seems to be a lack of understanding from the relationship between strategic management and project management and this is referred as an implementation gap. The implementation gap refers to the lack of understanding and consensus of organization strategy among top and middle-level managers (Gray and Larson, 2006, p. 29).
Stakeholder Perspectives/Ethical Dilemmas
The stakeholders of Harrison-Keyes are Will Harper and the other authors, Asia Digital Publishing, senior management team, and the employees.
