We have all passed the angry looking motorist on the side of the road franticallydialing numbers on their cell phone. The majority of us have also been the angryindividual on the side of the road. Changing that flat tire is a lot quicker and easier thanmost people realize. Aside from catastrophic engine failure, one of the major reasons fora delay in travel is a flat tire. Instead of waiting for a buddy, or the tow truck, wouldn't itbe nice to know how to get on the road again? The first thing to do when you get a flat, isnot to panic. Then, locate a suitable point to jack the vehicle, which is usuallyreenforced section of the frame. Place the jack under that point and raise the vehicle onlyas high as needed to pull the tire off of the axle. Not raising the vehicle high enough willonly cause more work, and raising it too high can be dangerous as the jack can collapsefrom being over extended. Once the vehicle is at a suitable height, take off the lug nutsand place them inside the hubcap so they don't disappear. Grasping the tire firmly, pull itoff of the axle, and lay it aside, making sure that it will not roll away. Bring the spare tirein front of the axle and line up the holes for the lugs on the axle with the lugs them selves.Once the holes are aligned, slide the wheel over the lugs. Place a lug nut on each lug, andtighten them hand tight. Clear all tools away from the area, and release the pressure onthe jack to bring the vehicle back down. Once on the ground, tighten the lug nuts the restof way. There is a specified torque for lug nuts, but obviously you don't have the properequipment to torque them, but don't worry about that as the repair shop will torque themwhen they fix your tire. Replace your hubcap, and make sure it is secure so it does notcome off while driving. Place the flat tire where your spare tire was, stow the jack andlug wrench, dust yourself off, and pat yourself on back. Tire change complete, start yourvehicle, put in gear and get on with your journey. But please, remember to disengage theparking brake, as that is not as easy of a repair.
