1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This paper will take the reader through some of the challenges encountered at the Medical Instruments Division of Stevens Corporation, a multidivisional company with diversified products servicing aerospace, automotives and medical markets. The Medical Instruments Division only focuses on manufacturing of medical instruments that are sold to the medical industry i.e. hospitals & laboratories and has always been a market leader with a good reputation within the industry but in the case study observed to threaten by the recent entry of competitors within the market. These competitors are coming up with products with better features at lower prices. This has resulted to the Medical Instruments Division losing its market share in the industry.

The author has assumed this division to have a functional type structure that has the below problems or challenges which prevent the organisation to perform effectively and continue to increase its market share:

• Lack of leadership
• No organisation strategy prioritization
• Dysfunctional organisation structure
• No customer focus
• Non existence of continuous improvement projects
• Lack / Poor communication
• Incorrect utilisation of resources
• Complacent Management and lack of innovation
• Obsolete manufacturing processes

The paper will categorise the highlighted challenges according to Behavioural (Consideration), Structural and Operational performance strategic variables which will allow the author to identify the main causes of these challenges.
