Prostitution should be legalized, it is an individual choice that the government shouldnâ€™t have control of. There are a couple of reasons why it would be smart and ethical for the government of Canada to legalize prostitution. The first reason is that crime rate would decrease if legalized. A section of the police force is solely devoted to stopping prostitution. If legalized the police force could utilize their energies better by trying to stop the spread of drug abuse and violence on our streets. Secondly, the government would have full control over the prostitution industry and regulate everything that goes on inside it. Finally the government could profit immensely; taxation of the prostitutes would lead to profit for the government. Everything points to the legalization of prostitution.

The government could have full control over prostitution if it were legalized. The government faces upcoming issues in reference to the ban on prostitution. The charter states that â€œeverybody has the right to life, liberty and the security of the person and the right not be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice (Charter section 7).â€ The government would be depriving them of their right to liberty if they take away their right to do what they want with their bodies; they are violating their fundamental rights. Today there are approximately 1 million prostitutes in the United States alone or approximately 1% of the population (http://www.bayswan.org/stats.html). The number of prostitutes is way too large for the government to have any control of. Prostitution is very dangerous right now because it is illegal to do or participate in. If legalized it would make the prostitutes much safer because they could go to the authorities if something happened. The government is once again violating their rights because the prostitutes canâ€™t go to the police because they would be arrested if they did; there safety is in jeopardy when there is a ban on prostitution. Making sure that the prostitutes were clean and disease free could also be under the control of the government if it were legalized. â€œIllegal prostitution takes away our individual rights to be our own person (http://www.echeat.com/essay.php?t=31137).â€ Prostitution has existed through out history. The ban on prostitution has pushed the industry underground and made the working conditions very dangerous. The government should be controlling the situation as well as making profit from it.
