Because children are victimized in every part of the country each community needs to provide an educational program that better ensures the safety of the children in its area. We all have a role to play in building strong neighborhoods where individuals’ families and children are valued and supported. Part of building a strong community is participating in the programs that support community members. Anything that supports kids and parents in your community can help strengthen families and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. With the help of family support activities many families are able to find the strength and resources they need to raise safe healthy and productive children. Access to adequate health care quality education and employment services benefit adult caretakers and protect children. Families operate within neighborhoods and communities. Factors that characterize a neighborhood such as availability of supports governmental and community, stability, violence, poverty, disorganization all affect the ability of families to nurture their children. Good communities for raising children include both caring and adequate institutions such as quality childcare and social services that accessible and community base as well as community connections between neighbors and friends. It’s shocking and tragic yet it’s critical that we as a community grasp that one out of every three victims of child abuse are babies and toddlers. At the most critical period in their development from newborn to 3-years old these children are at the highest risk for abuse and neglect. Scientific evidence has shown that a child’s earliest influences are critical to brain development and can affect a child’s long term health. Early positive messages set a foundation of adaptability and resilience and give a child the chance for achievement success and happiness. As a parent, grandparent or guardian you are already aware that every day counts for children especially during the first three years of life. A child’s earliest experiences are essential for healthy development and simple things make a tremendous difference eye contact touch food and attention. Having a caring devoted parent who makes their child’s needs priority is a huge advantage in life. Unfortunately not all babies and toddlers have attentive parents or caregiver and live in stable homes. Even in our beautiful community we have families living in crisis experiencing too many risk factors associated with child abuse neglect including poverty, domestic violence, and substance abuse to name a few. Keeping children who are at the highest risk for abuse and neglect safe and helping mothers and fathers who are living on the edge become successful parents is at the heart of relief.
