Poverty in Kenya

Recent estimates show that urban poverty in Kenya has increased tremendously. Ordinarily, one would wish not to discuss such a depressing subject as poverty. However, like death and taxes, it has become a continuing affliction with which many Kenyans and Africans in general have to contend with on a daily basis. Poverty in Kenya has taken on many forms: deprivation, isolation, alienation, insecurity and worst of all, despondency. It is a problem that manifests itself in many forms and at all levels of society and which threatens the very foundations of society.

The results suggest that there was a good match between national PRSP priorities and priorities generated from the 80 rural communities, but poor matches between district level PRSP priorities and community priorities, and between national PRSP priorities and the national PRSP implementation plan.(2) The results imply the need for a stronger approach to poverty reduction, with special emphasis on health issues and living standards.
There are many strategies that we can use to reduce the poverty in Kenya. We can start with achieving sustained growth in per capita income should be the top priority. All subsidies to large farms should be removed so that larger holdings are subdivided and sold to the many small peasants in the active land market that exists in Kenya. In education, we should fight to reduce private costs of primary education in the poor areas and for poor students. For health sector, the share of preventive health in the public budget should be increased with an expanded program of child immunization targeted at the poorer districts and poor families.(3)
