Sigmund Freud is considered the founder of psychoanalytic theory and that the primary existence of man is created and motivated by an unconscious intrapsychic sexual conflict. Freud also viewed the human body from a sexual perspective and that the human mind was built with basic components. Freud considered these the id, the ego, and the superego and that these components could cause conflict and shape an individuals personality. Freud believed the oral stage was developed from birth to 2 years old and the personality development was the libido. In today’s society you can see the characteristics of someone with oral personalities like nail-biters, thumb suckers, and even smokers. The anal stage was between the ages of 2 to 3 years when potty training would begin. Freud believed that the libido was now focused on the anus and that a child receives pleasure from pooping. In today’s world these personality characteristics can be seen as hates mess, tidy, and respectful to others. This is caused by a harsh potty training and leads to anal-retentive personality. If the potty training was lenient than it can be seen by someone who shares their belongings and like to give things away. The Phallic stage is for the ages of 4 to 7 years old and Freud placed the emphasis on masturbation. Freud stated the Oedipus and Electra complex are created in this stage, which helps the child with the identification of the same sex parent and sets motions in erotic attraction, resentment, and jealousy. The Latency stage is 7 to 11 years old and is considered the puberty stage, which Freud stated nothing happens at this stage due to the libido being dormant.
