Research week 3 Discussion
Bartholomew, Miller, Ciccolo, Atwood, & Gottlieb (2008) conducted a study based on poor diet proving to be a major risk for chronic diseases such as prostate cancer and coronary heart disease. A recent study of 41,358 men and women aged 30–49 found that those with the highest level of fresh fruit, root vegetables, and fruiting vegetables intake had a significantly lower rate of all-cause mortality. ...view middle of the document...
A brief stage-base quasi-experimental was design for use in clinical setting (Bartholonew et al., 2008).
The study a brief stage-based counseling guide was done to evaluate the Walk Texas! This was designed for use in 4 WIC clinical settings and a pre test posttest quasi-experimental design approved by the institutional Review Boards was utilized with intervention and assessment to match clinics for size and ethnicity. A total of 433 women were recruited over a 2-month period from Department of Health (Bartholonew et al., 2008). Overview of the program was given and informed consent given. Most participants were Spanish-speaking women with low educational accomplishments. All materials were given in English and Spanish. “Participants completed the baseline surveys at the time of recruitment and were asked to complete follow-up surveys at each certification and classroom visit through the following 12 months†(Bartholonew et al., 2008, p. 299). WIC counselors were hired and each received a 90 minutes training for Clinical Counseling Guide for Nutrition, clinical chart for each participant which was to be flagged and counselors were trained to utilized the Counseling Guide for Nutrition for each visit over a 12-month period. Materials included the assessment form, stage-matched counseling information, and written stage-matched materials (Bartholonew et al., 2008). According to Frankfort-Nachmias & Nachmias (2008), “ some Quasi-Experiments are extended over time to allow researchers to examine changes in the dependent variable†(p. 123).
To ensure internal Validity, prior to study a staged-based intervention was analyzed, materials were made available in English and in Spanish since the majority of participants were low-income Spanish-speaking women (Bartholonew et. al 2008). Of 433 participants who were recruited for the study, only 225 participants returned to at least 2 surveys. According to Bartholonew et al. (2008), figures were...
