Personal and managerial effectiveness
Two years back I was working with a major group, I was working seven days nine hours per week, I was happy and comfortable to work with them, I felt that am achieving my goal specially that they were respected and appreciated my work. The incident occurred when I applied for the master ,I found that I can’t manage between work and study, specially that I was a full time student ,my classes are five days a week from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm and my working hours were till 8 pm Daily. At the same time I had other offer from a small company it seems to me it was a good offer, because working hours were from 9am to 5pm five days a week and, they offered me 30% more than my salary, and the position was administration supervisor. Moreover, they asked me to join them as soon as possible. I accepted the offer and I joined them in May 2012. After joining them I realized the difference in the environment and the management structure was obviously different to what I used to in my earlier company.
The first week was very boring, I was sitting in the office without doing real work. I did my best and I went to Human resources manager to discuss the issue with her. However, I will mention part from the conversation between us, (I asked her “when will I start real work? I need to know my rules in the company and what I will do, give me training and introduce me to other departments”, She told me: “we are waiting for the general manager and he will decide what yours rule are”, I told her “I already signed an offer letter for administration supervisor and the rules for this position should be clear”, she answered me “No, because the general manager might change his mind and he wants you to work as a personal Assistant for him”).The second week was the same so as for the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and the eighth. For me sitting at the office without doing anything is really boring and it leads one to be disappointed, clearly I started to hate the place but I could not say I hated work because, I had no work actually, So I decided to help myself and do something about the situation before it’s too late. I remembered the times when I was excited about joining them, and did not want to be negative, so I realized that knowing the problem is the first step towards solving it. I tried to help other employees by offering them help and learning the job at the same time but, no response. No one wanted to help me, I guess everyone felt that I am a threat and might take their position. I was frustrated because I felt stuck and unable to move forward and could not do something to develop my career.
At that time, when I felt that the situation has not been resolved yet, I start to solve it through my experience, interpersonal skills and my ability to cooperate with a team, which form important factors in ensuring a healthy workplace.
