Reminiscing About Holland
Holland is famous for its dikes and windmills, but there are many other things to do and see. They have wonderful museums, Anne Frank’s dairy, beautiful flowers, outstanding cheese and good beer. They even have a theme park that is an interactive miniature city called Madurodam. Being stationed there in the U.S. Air Force was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. I found Dutch people to be very friendly. They will do almost anything to help you; as the adage goes, they would give you the shirt off of their backs. The neighborhood kids were playing soccer in the street. They asked if I wanted to join them, I reluctantly said I couldn't because I was heading to Madurodam. Downtown was full of shoppers. Many of them were doing their daily shopping while others appeared to be just walking around enjoying the great weather. As I passed the flower shop, the fragrances from the flowers caught my attention. The smell was amazing and the flowers looked so pretty. I felt so lucky to be stationed in such a great place. I wondered what growing up here would be like.
As I approached the train station, I was trying to figure out, in Dutch, how to purchase a ticket. I wasn’t fluent in the language, but I wanted to at least make an effort. As I stood at the counter, the ticket agent asked, “Kan ik u helpen?” I replied, “Ja, kan ik koop een retourtje naar Den Haag?” Which translates into, “Yes, can I purchase a round trip ticket to The Hague?” I wasn’t sure if I said it correctly. The agent looked up at me and smiled. She said in English, “That was pretty good.” I smiled back and thanked her. As I headed up the ramp, the train was pulling into the station. I double-checked my ticket to make sure this was the right one. I boarded and looked around for a seat near the window. As we departed the station, questions started racing through my mind. Did I make the right decision about going alone? Should I have told someone else other than my girlfriend where I was going? Should I have brought my passport with me? Did I have enough money on me to cover this trip?
At this point, it was too late to worry about those things. I needed to regain my composure. I convinced myself that everything would work out. I...
