The relation between media and eating disorders has grown substantially since media has begun to advertise the different type of body images. The body image advertised by the media is only possessed naturally by 5% of American females, but has women all over the world trying to attain such an unrealistic and dangerous body image. It even has men starting to feel the pressure of becoming thin. Men now make up 25% of the eating disorders cases. For many people it is genetically impossible to obtain the media’s ideal body image, which may contribute to their obsession for a thin body frame.

This is proven by the study from the University of Central Florida that nearly 50% of girls aged 3 to 6 were already concerned about their weight. An astonishing fact is that adolescent girls are more afraid of gaining weight than getting cancer, losing their parents, or nuclear war. 47% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures. Even a simple thing such as a magazine photo can sway such young people to eating disorders. By seeing media all around them children and adolescents see these thin models as role models and pursue what these models want and have. This is why 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat and 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner.
Up to 24 million people of all ages and even genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States. Out of these 24 million people 95% are between the ages of 12 and 25. Such young people are being effected more because not only do adolescents watch 3-4 hours of TV a day but 60% of Caucasian middle school girls read at least one fashion magazine regularly. Whenever women wish to become healthier or become bored they usually turn to women magazines and they advertise 10.5 more articles promoting weight loss than men’s magazines did. While the media is pushing women to become considerably thinner, they are pushing men to become more muscular and leaner by throwing people unrealistic photos of such unattainable “perfect” bodies. One in 200 American women suffers from anorexia and two to three in 100 American women suffer from bulimia, this is just 2 examples of the millions out there that people do listen to the media and try to attain what the media tells them is perfect. Eating disorders increases as the media increases and the media has made eating disorders the highest mortality rate of any mental illnesses.
The media portrays eating disorders as the normal thing to do and sometimes seem to encourage it by having models and actors who are known for their eating disorders, such as Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, and Elizabeth Hurley. Even when models are interviewed they talk about women who inspired them and who they look up to but would never weigh as much as they did. For example,...
