“Facebook! Twitter! Tumblr!” Ito ang sigaw ng kabataan. Sila ang nabibilang sa saklaw ng mga gumagamit ng Social Networking Sites. Alam nating lahat ang mga panganib o pakinabang na idinudulot ng World Wide Web, subalit, ang epekto nito sa mga mag-aaral ay hindi isinasaalang. Sa iba, ang SNS siguro ay nakakatulong sa kanilang edukasyon, pero may iba rin naman na hindi sumasang ayon.

Ang pag-aaral na ito ay idinuong sa Social Capital Theory (Bourdieu, et. Al., as cited by Qureshi, 2006). Ang konsepto ng Social Capital Theory ay umiiral simula noong nabuo ang mga maliliit na kommunidad at nakipag-ugnayan ang mga tao sa iba nang may pananalig at tiwala; ngunit, ang terminong ito sa kanyang kasalukuyang anyo at mga kaugnay na kahulugan ay pinasikat nina Bourdieu, Coleman, Granovetter at ni Putnam.
Ang Social Capital Theory ay nakabase sa kasabihang “Matutulungan ako ng aking mga koneksyon” (Cross and Cummings, 2004, as cited by Qureshi, 2006), na tungkol sa pagtatag ng mga ugnayang naglalayong lumikha ng mga nasasalat at hindi madaling unawain na mga benepisyo sa madalian o matagalang termino. Ayon kay Lin (2000, as cited by Qureshi, 2006), na ang mga benepisyo ay maaaring pangsosyal, pangkaisipan, pang-emosyonal at pang-ekonomikal.
Ang pag-aaral na ito ay naglalayong maintindihan at maunawaan ang epekto ng mga social networking sites sa mga kabataan ngayon. Ayon pa nga sa social cognitive theory, ang paguugali ng tao, personal na kadahilanan ay dulot ng kanyang kapaligiran (Bandura 1977; Bandura 1986). Sinusuportahan ito ng social network theory na nagsasaad ng kahalagahan ng mga koneksyon.
Ang pag-aaral na ito ay nabuo rin mula sa Social Learning Theory (Bandura). Ang teoryang ito ay tungkol sa pag-uugali ng tao, na nagsasabing sa pamamagitan ng pag-oobserba sa pagkikilos ng ibang tao ay natututo tayo ng maraming bagay. Sinasaad din dito na ang pag-uugali at personal na mga kadahilanan ng isang tao ay nakabase sa kapaligiran nito. Nilalayon ng pag-aaral na ito na malaman ang epekto ng mga SNSs sa ating mga kabataan ngayon, lalo na’t halos minu-minuto ay ito lamang ang kanilang inaasikaso.
Bilang mga tao, karaniwan lamang sa atin na makipag-ugnay sa iba. Ngunit, dahil sa lahat ng bagay ay magkaugnay, hindi maiiwasan na mayroon itong dulot na epekto sa ating lahat. Ang mga social networking sites ay isang manipestasyon ng social capital theory dahil naglalayon itong pag-ugnayin ang mga tao sa iba’t-ibang bahagi ng mundo sa pamamagitan ng paggamit sa teknolohiya upang mapadali ang sosyalisation. Ang paggamit sa mga social networking sites upang magkalat ng impormasyon ay sinasabing isa sa pinakamabisang paraan ng pagbabahagi ng kaalaman.
Ang kaalaman at epektong dulot ng mga social networking sites ay makakatulong sa mga kabataan natin ngayon upang mas mapadali ang kanilang pag-aaral.
