America, the Land of the Free
Same-sex marriage is one of the most controversial topics in today’s society. In some states it is illegal for two people of the same gender to come together in marriage. America is supposedly a land built on freedom, but there is nothing free about being denied marriage here in Pennsylvania because of gender. You need to think about what is fair and right before you continue to reject passing the same-sex marriage law. Pennsylvania needs to legalize same-sex marriage.
After New Jersey just recently declared same-sex marriage legal, it leaves Pennsylvania as the lone northeastern state not allowing same-sex marriage. Fifteen states allow same-sex marriage in whole as well as many other states on the cusp or in transition to allowing it. In addition to them, there are eight states that allow for civil unions between same-sex couples. Many ...view middle of the document...
Same-sex marriage is a problem that is close to home as well. My cousin is lesbian and cannot be brought together by holy matrimony here. She had to leave Pennsylvania, her home, just so that she could legally be with the one she loves. One out of every ten people in the United States is gay or lesbian. That means the same problem my cousin and our family faces everyday happens all over the country.
One argument against same-sex marriage is; it violates principles set in the bible and is considered unholy. However “wrong†the bible says it may be, the United States is not a theocracy. Religion does not play a role in determining laws and regulations. Therefore not allowing the law of same-sex marriage to pass in Pennsylvania because of a religious book that pertains to only one religion is completely absurd.
My purpose in arguing this point is simple; all people should be treated equal. That is the main problem with not allowing same-sex marriage. There is still the negative connotation that is associated with gays or lesbians. For example, one might refer to school as being gay or a curfew being gay. They imply that gay is bad and therefore gay people are ridiculed for their sexuality. They can never fit into society because of the way it has been beaten into our brains that being gay is wrong. It is not. One’s sexuality does not define their character. When you pass the same-sex marriage law, it will be a huge stepping stone towards society accepting gays and lesbians. They will start to be seen as equals and no different than anyone else.
The definition of freedom is this; the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. For a country that defends freedom, thrives because of freedom, and is morally built off freedom, how could we deny the right to same-sex marriage? How could we deny that freedom? This is why we must push for the right of same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania so we can truly be “America, the land of the free.â€
