A. definition Applied Linguistics
Today, development of linguistics is growing fast. Another aspect related to the fields of language study is also growing. Studies on language not only include one aspect only, but have spread to other aspects outside the language associated with the use of language and human life. Linguistic theory is a branch of applied linguistics that focuses on the general theory and methods in language research. So it can be concluded that applied linguistics is the use of knowledge about natural language produced by students of language that is used to increase the success of use of practical tasks that use language as a core component.
B. History of Applied Linguistics
The term applied linguistics refers to a variety of activities that involve some aspects related to the language problem solving or to handle some of the concerns which related to language. the University of Michigan in 1946 is the first officially which held as an independent course for their students.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the use of this term has gradually be expanded by inserting what was then referred to the automatic translation. In 1964, the European Council fund the prepatory work after two years working , the Association Internationale de Linguistique appliquée (International Association of Applied Linguistics Aila usually referred to by the French acronym) was established by international congress and was held in Nancy, France.
Papers for the congress were asked to be the two strands of different teaching foreign languages and automatic translation. Over the years, the focus of attention continues to expand. Aila officials describe the applied linguistics as tools to help solving certain problems in society.
Applied linguistics focuses on various areas in the complex society in which language plays a role. it seems there is consensus that the objective is to implement the findings and techniques of research in linguistics and related disciplines to solve practical problems.
In addition to teaching a foreign language and machine translation, the most important sampling of the issues in the field of applied linguistics today is include topics such as language for specific purposes (language and communication issues related to cost, disturbance language, law, medicine, science ), language policy and planning, and language and literacy problems.
While history Applied Linguistics in Indonesian. Until now there is no complete record about linguistics studies in Indonesia, although linguistic studies in Indonesia has been aplied and learned quite long. in Indonesia, at the beginning language study performed by the Dutch and other European experts, they teached the indonesian people about langguage. the purpose of it was helping colonial administration. language study was educated at Formal education in the faculty of linguistics literature and in teacher education institutions until the late fifties. the material of the langguage study on that time was only the normative concepts of traditional grammar.
