The presentation that I prepared for assignment two was related to social media, what it is and its effect on society today. I chose social media as my presentation topic because I feel that it is one of the most relevant issues or changes that we are seeing in society today, it has been said that the social media revolution is the biggest revolution since the industrial in the late 18th century (Patterson, 2011). The second slide of the presentation is merely a contents page where the class will be informed of what is going to be covered within the assignment. The items are placed in chronological order (what is social media? What does it do? Benefits Etc.), an overview is fairly standard within most presentations as most audiences receive information better if they know what they are about to be told.
The next two slides introduce the concept of social media; the idea behind these two slides was not to tell the audience facts about social media that they most likely already know, such as examples and Facebook statistics etc. The main focus was to get them to look at social media beyond just networking with friends but to the broader picture of how it actually affects society as a whole. Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological principles of the internet, which allows the creation and exchange of user generated content” (Haelin, 2005) I feel that this definition of social media gives a far broader sense of what it means to the world rather than individuals. This quote was also chosen because it mentions that social media is “user generated”, which is what defines the success and value of social media, and is also what sets it apart as being more successful than other media mediums like television and radio.
A more specific definition is given; Social media sites and applications are like “virtual places where individuals gather for the purpose of gathering and sharing information and opinions on similar interests” (Garterfield, 2008). This gives the audience a more specific idea of social media as a concept rather than their own experiences with social networking sites. The strengths and the reason why social media is such a force in the world today is because it is user generated, the information being spread is raw and unedited by news corporations and other businesses (Patterson, 2011). To a degree it is safe from corruption by governments and other forces because it is not a paid for product and there is little if any money to be made off people opinions, so there is no motivation for corruption.
To put it in a very basic format, you can just define the two words; social: people/society, and media: mass communication. The breaking down of the two words allows for the simplest understanding of the concept possible, but also possibly the best. The mass communication of the people gives power to both the individual and the masses; this is a very powerful concept that nothing has ever come close to being comparable.
Very serious examples of this are the current situations in Libya and Egypt, where the only way that civilians and rebels were able to organise themselves to oppose the terrible dictatorships that have reined over them for decades was communication via social media websites.
