The Dave Matthews Band has been a musical power house for years. They have meshed together almost every type of music together to create their extremely unique sounds and attractiveness towards their music. Dave Matthews, lead singer and guitarist from South Africa has put together a band that no one will ever be able to create again. Dave picked four extremely talented and unique sounding men to join his band and together they have created some amazing music. The members of the band include Stefan Lessard on bass, Boyd Tinsley on violin, Leroi Moore on saxophone and one of the best drummers in the world, Carter Beauford. The song consist of four stanzas: three that tell stories of people's lives, and the last a riddle which brings comedy into the song. In the first stanza we are introduced to Cyrus Jones. "Cyrus Jones 1810 to 1913,/ made his great grandchildren believe you could live to 100 and 3/ a 100 and 3, is forever when you're just a little kid so/ Cyrus Jones lived forever. " The second stanza allows us to meet Muriel Stonewall. She lived 51 years and during those years in her life, was forced to send her sons off in World War II, and then bury them. By the time we are introduced to Mickey Carson, the melody and voice in the song are increased, which intensifies the listener's curiosity of what the narrator is talking about. Mickey Carson rode his bike and longed to be like Mr. Vertigo on the flying trapeze, he died at 62.

Their live and their deaths are treated delicately in the song, but then laid uncovered in the video. Yes, besides being a great-grandfather, Cyrus Jones was also a slave, and yes, you see his lashing at his master's hands. The fresh scars are hard to ignore, as are the tears of Murial Stonewall, who "lost both of her babies in the second great war."

Along with the description of the characters, Dave uses literary devices to make his song more descriptive and makes brings out more of his poetic side. A simile is used in the third stanza when he states, "He rode his bike like the devil until the day he died." He also writes a comical fourth stanza that makes it clear that he is not so morbid after all and he is actually being sarcastic while talking to the gravedigger.
