There are a variety of medical treatments used in every day society such as stem cell research. This research strives to cultivate and nurture stem cells, allowing them to be reproduced to form other specific parts of the body. By providing the raw material for almost every human tissue, we could obtain new treatments for a wide range of diseases. This means that with the use of these stem cells, limbs and organs could be grown in a lab and then be provided for transplants or other situations like curing illnesses. Although stem cell research has its benefits there is a widespread of controversy over it that emanates in the creation and usage of stem cells. With this ongoing research, stem cells could eventually be used to repair or replace tissue damaged by diseases and injuries. In today’s society, stem cell research is being used for procedures on patients with leukemia, lymphoma, other blood disorders, and some solid tumors. Bone marrow transplants are one of the three main technologies that are used today.  Stem cells are used in bone marrow transplants by replacing the patient’s bone marrow stem cells with those from a healthy, matching donor. If the transplant is effective, the stem cells will travel into the patient's bone marrow and begin to make new, healthy leukocytes to replace the abnormal cells. The second technology that is used today is peripheral blood stem cell transplant which can be obtained from drawn blood. However, peripheral blood stem cells are thin in the bloodstream which makes it a challenge to collect enough to perform a transplant. The third technology used is umbilical cord stem cell transplants which have been proven to be useful in treating the same types of health problems as those treated by the first two technologies. With the use of these technologies, doctors are able to do procedures in order to give humans with these disorders opportunities to have a longer life.
On the other hand the Catholic Church has been an active participant in the ethical debate over stem cell research. The church hasn’t opposed to all types of stem cell research and has actually supported adult and umbilical cord stem cell research. However, the church is opposed to the use and destruction of embryos because of the fact that it involves the unjust taking of an innocent human life for the benefits of others. The embryo is still viewed as a person, or it is seen as a potential person. A human embryo is a human being in the embryonic stage and although an embryo doesn’t have its full characteristics it will still become a person and should be given the respect and dignity of one.
