2.0 Conducting Successful Library and Internet Searches

In order to conduct successful searches using the internet the student will need to know which databases to search, keywords used for searching, and methods for locating sources through related topic words or phrases. The use of specific words or phrases will be imperative to narrowing the search to obtain relevant information. Use specific keywords that most accurately describe the information and in order to narrow the number of “hits” (resources pulled up by the search) received it may be necessary to increase the number of keywords used.

Having a strategy for searching prior to beginning your search is a useful first step. Necessity in understanding how the library works and how to navigate through the online library in order to locate information being searched is fundamental to successful searches. The following steps will help eliminate wasted time:

1. Think about what the search is for
2. Use subject directories for isolating sites within the topic category
3. Use search engines

Problems will occur using the internet and being prepared in dealing with them will make the search effort less stressful. The information gathered through the internet is not always correct and with technology advancing as quickly as it is there will inevitable be technological problems. Use common sense when sifting through the information brought up from the search. Check the credibility, accuracy of information, and what supports the information supplied. Keep in mind that educational and government sites are more likely to be more reliable sources of information.

While conducting online searches is useful the option for using audio and video tools is an additional advantage. Listening to the audio of text and then reading the same in written format allows the researcher to work through the situation and envision what is being described as though they were experiencing it for themselves. In addition, visual tools allow the researcher to put together questions they may have from the reading and look for answers within the story. Audio and video aids tend to make material retention more successful.

Realize that the information found at the library is a more reliable and accurate source of information. The search engines cannot find everything all the time.

It is good practice to head to the library when searching for in-depth research requiring historical perspective and searching for out-dated...
