2.0 Conducting Successful Library and Internet Searches
In order to conduct successful searches using the internet the student will need to know which databases to search, keywords used for searching, and methods for locating sources through related topic words or phrases. The use of specific words or phrases will be imperative to narrowing the search to obtain relevant information. Use specific keywords that most accurately describe the information and in order to narrow the number of “hits” (resources pulled up by the search) received it may be necessary to increase the number of keywords used.
Having a strategy for searching prior to beginning your search is a useful first step. Necessity in understanding how the library works and how to navigate through the online library in order to locate information being searched is fundamental to successful searches. Keep in mind that educational and government sites are more likely to be more reliable sources of information.
